Duke University School of Nursing in Second Life

Duke University School of Nursing is already using Second Life as part of the campus learning. By the look of the video, it looks extremely fun and educational.

  1. It does look interesting. I work in an area that deals with online education for medical professionals and just this week I received and email discussing the potential for using Second Life in our environment. My biggest concern is the learning curve. While we think that physicians are on the upside of technology, it may not be the case. I've seen physicians not be able to navigate an online meeting, so would this be an effective tool?

  2. Beside from physicians who are not so tech-savy, we also have to count the students, professors, staff, etc., who are not computer-savy themselves. Not everyone is good with computer.

I work in the Distance Learning department at work and I am just confused at why some of the college kids here don't know how to navigate through the sites and use email.

We think every kid growing up today are good with computer, but the true is not so.

So you brought up a good question, how effective is the tool, if at all???

  3. We will find out - I am now involved in a project that will be looking at either Second Life or some similar virtual tool for physicians. (I actually shared your link to the Duke Nursing School with people I at work). While playing around in Second Life I tried to find this school, but haven't been able to - guess I need to improve my Second Life search terms - I wonder if they use a taxonomy or folksonomy?

    It should be interesting.
